First, poker is a game that can be played with 2 or more people. No Limit Hold ‘Em, or NLHE, (the game of choice in the USA) is typically played with 6 – 10 people. Typically casinos provide a professional poker dealer, and in a private or home game players might deal for themselves.
- A white object, known as the “dealer button” (sometimes labeled: dealer), is passed to the left after each hand to signify where the deal should start.
- The first card is dealt to the small blind, and then the big blind, going clockwise all the way around, until each player has two cards.
- In NLHE tournaments a Tournament Director will announce the small blind and big blind. In NLHE side games the blinds would be posted at the table or on the poker menu board.Blinds are forced bets used to encourage action. The player to the left of the dealer, or dealer button, must post the Small Blind. The player to the left of the Small Blind must post the Big Blind, like the speed limit on the highway, the blinds determine how fast chips move around. Bigger blinds means more chips moving.
- Once the blinds are posted the dealer will deal cards one at a time to his/her left until each player has two cards. And this is where the action or betting starts.
