The 2017 Caribbean Poker Party Festival kicked off this week at the Melia Caribe Tropical in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The tournament series, which is part of Party Poker LIVE, features $10,000,000 in guaranteed prize pools spread across events running from November 19 – 25.
The first event of the series to wrap up was the $1,000,000 guaranteed $10,300 buy-in ‘MILLIONS’ high roller. A total of 103 entries were made in the event, but in the end it was Norway’s Preben Stokkan who emerged victorious with the title and the first-place prize of $275,000.
Stokkan also earned 600 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win. This was his sixth POY-qualified final table of the year, and as result of the win, he has climbed into 144th place in the overall Player of the Year standings, which are presented in 2017 by the Commerce Casino & Hotel.
Stokkan was not the only player to make a big move in the POY standings as a result of making this final table. Steffen Sontheimer earned $55,000 and 150 points for his seventh-place finish in this event. The German poker pro has now made 14 final tables in 2017, winning three titles and cashing for $6,675,332 along the way. With this latest score Sontheimer has jumped to seventh place on the POY leaderboard with 4,502 total points earned so far.
There were plenty of other big-name players at the final table, including two-time World Poker Tour champion Jonathan Little (2nd – $175,000). There were also several WSOP bracelet winners at the final table, including Sam Greenwood (3rd – $124,100), Alexandru Papazian (4th – $100,000) and Pascal LeFrancoise (6th – $70,000). 2016 WSOP main event sixth place finisher Kenny Hallaert finished fifth in this event for an $85,000 payday, while Card Player Poker Tour bestbet Jacksonville champ and frequent high roller competitor Sean Winter finished eighth for $40,000.
